Mt Cook Region - we leave
Christchurch crossing the vast Canterbury Plain towards the highest
and most impressive Pass up to 945 metres. Shortly after the Porters
Pass we turn left and ride on adventurous tracks to the McKenzie
Country. We spend the first night at Lake Tekapo and carry on
towards Mt. Cook, New Zealand's highest mountain. The population
is getting sparse the countryside rougher and the road as well!
Catlins
Forest - in the next few days we even disappear further
into the whop whops away from the tourist roads as we follow the
tracks of the film Trilogy 'The Lord of the Rings'. In our tour
we cross the Lammerlaw Ranges and follow the route into the rainforest
of the catlins. On a bumpy slope along the rough coast with stunning
views over the step cliffs we reach the most southern point of
the mainland where it is only 4000km to the Antarctic!
The Fiordland - an awesome
and indescribable route to the Milford Sound is waiting for us.
Not for nothing the 121km long Milford Road was defined as a world
culture heritage - lush forests, harsh mountains, torrential rivers
and picturesque scenery are present in this region. However, the
ultimate landmark is the 16km long fjord with its world famous
pyramid hill - the Mitre Peak.
Along
the west coast - the road from Queenstown to Wanaka via
Cardrona is probably one of the greatest short cuts with fun of
riding which doesn't seem to end while crossing the Haast Pass.
Along steep cliffs the road winds between the deep blue glacier
lakes Wanaka and Hawea - a breathtaking view that invites us to
linger.
Icy Glaciers - all the same
1.5m per day the glaciers move down the hill to get cracks in
the surface from dragging boulders and finally melt. The 13km
long Franz Joseph and Fax Glaciers have their source in the perpetual
ice and stretch till the nearby rainforest.
Thermal springs - from the rainy evergreen west coast we
ride to the 385 meter high located village Hanmer Springs. With
its temperate thermal pools and the around laying nature park
this is an optimal place to give yourself and your bike a break.
Desert like - even more gravel
roads take us into the sunny corner of New Zealand. There is so
much to see and to do in the Abel Tasman National Park! Golden
sand beaches, lush rainforest and untouched sand dunes like amidst
a desert make this National Park so famous. Relax on the beach
or exercise yourself in the different types of watersport - there
is something for everyone!
Garden
City - extreme twisty is the last stretch of this tour.
The road towards Christchurch takes us along the awesome costal
line via Kaikoura with breathtaking views to the Pacific Ocean
and through native bushland back to the Garden City. This tour
will be a journey of your lifetime!
